No. 409
 Pennine Way - Kinder Low

This painting complements number 410 (see 'Recent work') derived from a number of digital photos taken on the same walk, and is in fact a view from a different point on the same pathway.  The vegetation cover is quite different from that in 410.  Here it is predominantly long grass, which reflects the light, whereas peat and heather tend to absorb it.  The sense of wide open space was the initial attraction here.  I sought to counterbalance the strong visual flow and 'movement' in the shape of the hills with a partially opposing line of direction in the grasses.  The pathway is used as a lead-in for the eye, drawing us into the picture space.  The dominant central cloud and shadow it casts on the skyline beneath serve to hold the eye in the distance.
