 Edale - Jacob's Ladder

One of a number of paintings of the southern end of the Pennine Way seen in late winter.  Jacob's Ladder is the steep pathway which climbs from Barber Booth onto the Kinder Scout plateau - an alternative approach to Grindsbrook.  I was drawn initially to the play of winter light on the hills, and the contrast between the dark and dramatic shape of the group of firs on the left set against the lightness of the hills and sky beyond.  Each individual component is given added emphasis in this painting.
