A personal favourite, this painting represents qualities often sought.  There is a unity of space, subtlety of light and atmosphere, and a strong sense of movement in air and sky.  Successful paintings can often result from source material which is relatively unpromising at the outset, as was the case here, although it can take longer to resolve the painting.  The cool sky and overall colour scheme are typical of weather conditions in the Peak District at certain times of the year.  Unusually dark tones in the foreground enhance the translucency of the sky.
