One of a pair of larger paintings developed from
very small studies carried out from memory and imagination of a location
which is very familiar to the artist. Houndkirk Moor lies adjacent to
the Roman road running from Ringinglow to Fox House. The moor rises up
to the south-west of Sheffield, serving as a barrier against the
prevailing weather and often lit from behind by the afternoon or evening
light. In winter, storms spill over the high moor and sweep down the
eastern slopes carrying snow, hail or rain with them. Dark, warm tones
of red and orange are used to complement the grey overcast sky and to
give the moor an elemental and emotional charge.
