Five large scale variations of this image have
been developed from an original small sketch. Barbrook is part of the
Eastern Moors estate, an area of open moorland which has no particularly
distinguishing features except for its wide open nature and its exposure
to biting winds in winter. In such conditions the moor seems to ‘hunker
down’ as the low angle of the light and chill winds cut across its
frozen surface. Shapes flow and blend. Sky becomes ground and ground
sky. The contrast between frozen air above and the warmer tones and
textures of the heather below is emphasised by the dramatic use of rusts
and reds in the composition.
