Mam Tor is a focal point for walkers setting off from Castleton in the
heart of the Derbyshire Peak District. Close by are the famous Peak
Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, the Blue John Mine and Treakcliff Cavern. The
upward arc of the clouds in the composition provides the key to the mood
of this painting. All other shapes in the painting - the shadow in the
foreground, the hint of a curve in the dry limestone walls, the rocky
face of Mam Tor, the lens shape of oak and beech wood on Rushup Edge -
all serve to complement and mirror the movement in the clouds, creating
a subtle visual pattern which allows the eye to move across the canvas.
